This large jar is wheel thrown in 2 pieces, then fitted with a lid and knob. A crackle flashing slip is applied to the middle part of the body and the flat part of the lid. The cracks are inlayed with colorants adding contrast and color to the natural texture. The interior is lined with glaze made with wood ash from our fireplace. During the glaze firing the exterior reacts with the soda fire atmosphere, recording the flame’s movement in the kiln. A matte glaze develops on the slip and a contrasting glossy glaze develops on the raw clay body, both following the path of the glaze saturated flame. Matte textures are sanded with fine grit diamond pads post firing giving a luscious texture to the clay surface.
